Einstein's theory of general relativity and special relativity is the greatest achievment scientific imagination man has ever seen. His theory describes the motion of particles moving at speeds close to that of the speed of light. Einstein used Newton's laws of physics to derive his theory and change history.
Einstein had theories for general relativity and one called special relativty
Special Relativity
In special relativity Einstein used 2 statements to base his whole theory off of
1.Speed of light is the same for all observers no matter their relative speeds
2.The laws of physics are the same in any inertial reference
Einstein used these statements to develop his theories on motion and speed to your reference point.
Einstein's biggest claim to fame for his theory of special relativity is deriving the equation E=mc^2
m=mass and c= the speed of light
Einstein's theory proposes that distance and time can never be absolute.
General Relativity
general relativity was Einstein expanding on his theory of special relativity. In general relativity Einstein touched on the syubject of gravity and its affects on matter. Einstein that since in space their is no gravity, matter would cause space to curve. After Einstein derived this theory there was a boom of experimental activity by many scientist trying to disprove Einstein's theory. In this theory Einstein predicted that time dialation can become very significant when spacetime is curved by a massive object such as a black hole. Einstein's theory of general relativity was such a big deal because nobody was thinking of gravity at the time. He derived his theory from observations he made so he had very little to base his theory off of and the fact that his theory is still used today is amazing.
This picture shows Einsteins theory of how smaller objects travel toward or are "attracted" to larger objects. picture via http://archive.ncsa.uiuc.edu/Cyberia/NumRel/GenRelativity.html
This picture explains a basic property of Einstein's theory of general relativty that when a person is standing on earth they cannot feel the effects of gravity and a person would feel the same if they were in a elevator in space that was accelerating upward at approximately 32 feet per second squared
